Bo Burnham Make Happy

06/06/2017 Main

Hey fans of all things arts and entertainment, welcome back to my blog! I recently saw one of the best comedy specials I have seen in a long time, and it one of the Netflix produced specials. I watched Bo Burnham Make Happy last week and I really, really liked it. His mix of dry humor, self awareness and musical talent makes for a wonderful show that you just want to keep going.  He ends the show by saying that he hopes he made the audience happy, with the most sincere smile I have ever seen.  Read more

I was just watching the new Star Wars movie (you know how much of a movie buff I am from my post on hidden messages in movies) , and was wondering how amazing it would be to live in the Star Wars universe. So, I decided to head on over to http://www.used.forsale/canada/ and find some books and movies with amazing sci-fi universes. Down below is my top picks from movie, books, and television. 13/01/2017 Main

Hi everyone.  How are we all doing on this fine day?  Living in London you tend to forget how lucky you are to be surrounded by so many amazing galleries and exhibitions.  Myself even, I don’t go to anywhere near as many exhibitions and galleries as I would like.  For 2017 it’s one of my New Year’s Resolutions, so I wanted to share some of the art shows I’m really excited to see. Museum of Anthropology in Van

Hey there guys, welcome back to my Arts blog!  Today I wanted to tell you about an amazing Museum I visited whilst I was over in Canada.  My favourite museum that I went to in Canada was the Museum of Anthropology (MOA) at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.  It is a world renowned Museum, known in particular for its arts and cultural work by the First Nation band governments across the Pacific Northwest.  There are hundreds and thousands, actually probably hundreds of thousands of pieces throughout the museum some hidden away in drawers for you to discover and fawn over.   Read more

Review Lil Dicky

Hey what's up everybody, hope you’re all well and a warm welcome back to my arts and entertainment blog. If you guys have been getting my newsletter( if not then sign up using the option form) then you know I have been listening to a lot of new, different music lately thanks to a online classified website I found that I have been getting all kinds of CDs from. I started getting back into rap recently and right now I am boppin to this guy called Lil Dicky, a.k.a Firm Handshake. I remember seeing this guy a couple years online with a hit comedy rap song and he is still staying true to himself and the comedy rap genre but has gotten big recently, making songs with Snoop Dogg and Fetty Wap. Knows as one of the original Youtube rappers Lil Dicky a.k.a Young Dick has now achieved a level of fame he must have dreamed about, and maybe more. Read more

Unicorn Cafe

Unicorn Cafe

Hey everybody. Welcome back to my arts and entertainment blog. How are we all this fine US election day? So it seems Mr Trump has indeed bagged the Presidency and will soon be chief executive officer of the most powerful country in the world? What do you all make of that then? I am not sure as yet myself. But we certainly have interesting times ahead, that is for certain. Anyway, I digress. Let us get back on topic. Have you all signed up for my newsletter yet by the way? If you would like to receive it on a monthly basis be sure to sign up using your email address via the optin form. So anyway, talking of a world gone mad, some friends of mine were recently in Southeast Asia and posted some photos of themselves dressed up as unicorns (of all things) in a cafe decorated with unicorns. Predictably it was called the Unicorn Cafe, (fancy that). Now for me, this represents a very surreal niche in entertainment. I mean it is borderline bizarre. But they are doing good business by all accounts so I guess there must be a market for that kind of stuff. But what is it that we need to push the boundaries of normality to such levels to keep ourselves entertained? Is it as a result of the sheer sensory overload that we all experience on a daily basis in the modern age? I think that could well be the answer. What bizarre entertainment experiences have you had of late? Been to any cat cafes or trampoline parks? What happened to the cinema followed by a pint at the pub? I must be getting old I guess. The Hidden Messages in Movies

The Hidden Messages in Movies

Welcome back folks.  I’m taking a break from oil painting at the moment and instead I’m here with a bit of an odd entertainment topic, specifically within the movie world.  In a similar vein to the ‘Did you know that in the scene where…?’ kind of trivia that accompanies film reviews by the superbly put together Internet Movie Database and the like, I thought I’d talk about something equally as trivial but a little more thought-provoking: hidden messages or meanings.  That’s right.  It’s actually a thing.  Whether or not you get these meanings or messages or identify with them in some way is an entirely different thing.  Read more

Facebook Art Groups

Facebook Art Groups

Hello folks. Another quick art post today. I just wanted to mention what a great idea it is to join as many art related Facebook groups as you possibly can. They are excellent to use as a sounding board for your work, get advice from more experienced artists and make new friends and contacts. They will really help you develop your artist's eye and take your work to the next level. I personally am a member of 15 different art groups and I post in them on a regular basis. If you want to make your way in the art world you really need to immerse yourself in the subject. Facebook is an excellent way of achieving this and moving in the right circles of people to develop your work. Other social media services such as Twitter and Instagram can also be very useful but Facebook is definitely the daddy. I would be very surprised if you were to tell me that you don't have a Facebook account in this day of age, but if you haven't, I would recommend registering today, even if it is just so you can use it as a means to further your art by joining some groups. Don't be put off by all the horror stories you hear about Facebook such as privacy infringement etc. It is largely hype and you are solidly in control of what you do and don't want to share with people. Anyway, there is my thought for the day, ladies and gents. I will be back soon with another inspirational blog post for your enjoyment. Take care for now. Read more

Oil Painiting

23/05/2016 Main

Hi all! My mother recieved an oil painting starter kit for her birthday recently and it has inspired me to write this blog post. I was surprised at how different painting with oils was to regular painting, not that I am an expert! There’s actually quite a bit to it. Anyhow, if you are interested in oil painting, you could do worse than to give this blog post the once over first! Enjoy! Read more

Listening to Music

10/05/2016 Main

Hi everybody. I had a spare few minutes so thought that I would bash out a quick blog post to stay in touch with you all. I’m currently got my earphones plugged into my computer and I’m listening to some music on Youtube. That tends to be the way I listen to all my music these days. Gone are the days of me buying a CD or even downloading music from iTunes. Even if I use my iPhone, I tend to search for music via Youtube. It’s just so easy. I believe that the Spotify service is very good and extremely well priced, but to be honest, I don’t listen to music often enough to make it worth my while. Or maybe I’m just a bit tight. I don’t know. Either way, it’s far cry from back in the day when I had to rely on my Sony Walkman not to run out of battery power or chew my tapes up. Things have definitely improved on that front. But then there was also the satisfaction of looking at your tape, vinyl or CD collection that you just don’t get with a folder of mp3s or Youtube. There was something satisfying very about looking and admiring your collection of music. Oh well, such is progress and the modern world. Anyway, enough of my musings. I’ll get on with some proper work now and enjoy my music as I am doing so. Be sure to let me know what your preferred way of listening to music in the modern age is. Is anybody still using an iPod? Drop me a line at the usual address folks. Until next time! Read more

Arcade Fire

16/04/2016 Main

My recent taste for contemporary music has found me absolutely falling head over heels for a Canadian band called Arcade Fire. I have bought ALL of their albums and I find that so many of the songs on each album are absolute hits. The band is huge! Led by a French Canadian married couple, Regine Chessange and Win Butler, the band consists of 12 members. I started getting really into Arcade fire after I heard my daughter, Charlotte, playing their wonderful song ‘Wake Up’ on a recent trip home to visit her Mom. “This is glorious”, I said to Charlotte, “who is this?” Charlotte was ultimately embarrassed because she thinks I’m having some sort of mid life crisis and trying to behave younger than I really am. But I don’t know why a woman in her fifties can’t enjoy the same music as one in her twenties.  I recently heard about an Irish man who died, aged 90 something, who regularly went to dance music parties (or raves I think they call them) and to nightclubs in Ibiza. Good on him, I say! So I think my interest in an indie rock band is perfectly acceptable if I use this chap as my barometer.  Arcade fire have a very unique sound. The band is heavy on percussion and when combining this with the use of electric guitars, the effect is one of almost ethereal qualities.  As well as the superb lyrics and fantastic musicians within the band, I just love Regine Chessange’s voice. Her husband, Win Butler, provides the lead vocal on the majority of their songs, with Chessange being the backing vocalist. However, in more recent albums many of the songs utilize Chessange’s angelic voice for the lead. My favorite example of this is in the song ‘Sprawl Two’ in which Chessange provides a powerful, haunting vocal in an upbeat disco-esque song that is about the dissatisfaction of today’s youth. So many contrasts make up this ridiculously catchy, yet moving, song. Read more

Pottery Failures

15/04/2016 Main

Hello again! Yesterday I had my fourth pottery class and, on this occasion, we were attempting to make small dipping bowls for sauces, or whatever one chooses to use a dipping bowl for really.  My pottery attempts have been mostly failure so far but I was sure that a tiny bowl would be easy even for someone as clumsy with the clay as me.  Our teacher, Mary, knocked up 7 or 8 bowls in a few minutes in order to demonstrate how simple they are to make. This made it all the more embarrassing when each of my attempts resembled a lump of coal. To make matters worse, my team mates all managed to create something that looked like a bowl, at least in terms of shape but not necessarily prettiness. I’ve always wanted to give pottery a go and thought it would be something I’d have some skill for. From doing this class, I’ve learnt that thinking you would enjoy something and actually being any good at it are not necessarily synonymous with one another.  What the class has taught me, however, is that I couldn’t give two hoots about how good I am. I love going to the classes. Our teacher Mary is so lovely and patient with me and my fellow classmates and I have a good laugh about my terrible creations, all in good humor. We have also started going for a drink at a local bar together after the class. I thoroughly enjoy this because my classmates are all great fun and we share many similar interests. I shall definitely carry on with the class, regardless of how terrible I am. Who knows, perhaps I shall pick it up one of these days and, in the meantime, my classmates and I get to have a good laugh and my grandson will continue to receive lots of fossilised ‘dinosaur poop’ in the mail! Get Set Go Grandma

02/04/2016 Main

Hi, my name is Catherine and I have decided to start writing a blog about my newfound passion for the arts. I have recently taken early retirement, at just 57 years young, and I’ve been keeping myself busy by watching plays at the local theatre, joining a pottery class, teaching myself to draw and paint, purchasing pieces of art for my home, listening to more contemporary music and going to watch bands live, amongst all the 20 somethings! My husband and I divorced 3 years ago and my children are grown and living in different states but fortunately I have a small group of fantastic female friends who often accompany me on my jaunts. I have also started learning more about using computers and thought it would be a jolly good idea to combine both of my new hobbies by writing a blog about my own recent McConaissance.  I really do feel that my life has taken the turn of Get Set Go and I’m ready to run with it!
